Hollywood comes to David Austin Roses

On a cold, grey Wednesday morning this fall, a little bit of Hollywood excitement came to the David Austin rose fields and nursery — in the form of a 15-strong film crew plus two vans full of equipment. Their aim was to tell our story and capture a behind the scenes look at David Austin Roses for a prestigious Chinese jewellery company, Rose D’Amour. As the name suggests, their love of roses is almost as strong as ours, where the beauty of the rose is of paramount importance.

The first shot was sunrise over the nursery – and nature performed at its best, right on cue, catching late rose blooms shining like coloured jewels in the dawn light.

David Austin Jnr takes his position in the middle of the rose trial fields in preparation for “Take 1” as the cameraman and crew wrestle between rose bushes, and a few thorns, to achieve the best camera angles.

As a family business, of three generations, every aspect of the rose nursery was covered. Even Bertie, David Austin Snr’s dog, took a cameo part and just about managed to sit long enough, encouraged by a few treats along the way.

The story, of course, is all about the rose. David was captured on film talking to Rose Breeding Manager Carl Bennett in one of the rose breeding greenhouses. As part of our cut rose breeding programme, Carl is in charge of the 15,000 hand crosses that take place each year, producing around 40,000 seedlings. Out of thousands of seedlings only one or two new varieties will be chosen after a rigorous, eight-year long trial and selection process. Carl says that he is in the privileged position of having a crystal ball by knowing what the next David Austin rose may look like.

More than 500 David Austin cut roses were prepared and arranged in readiness for the filming schedule. The Gallery, normally used to serve refreshments to visitors, became a pop-up floristry studio filled with colour, fragrance and a buzz of activity as the roses were prepared for their film debut.

…And they didn’t disappoint.

The next David Austin cut rose may well have been chosen, but we have to wait for it to be released — perhaps showing soon at a wedding or florist shop near you!
